Best Android Smartphones in India in the price range 15,000 to 25,000 INR

[Part of a guide to buying Android phones] This is the category of phones that fall just below the premium high end phones. Most of the phones here belonged to the high end perhaps a year back, but have been pushed down by the release of newer and better phones. I chose this range instead of segmenting it into two ranges about 20,000 INR because the phones in this range are quite similar and most people looking for phones in this category tend to have more flexible budgets. So here are the phones:
1. Samsung Galaxy S Plus (₨ 19,990 on letsbuy.com):
This is an upgraded version of the now famous Galaxy S phone that put Samsung on the route to become the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. The phone comes with a brilliant 4 inch Super-AMOLED touch screen and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread overlaid with Samsung’s Touchwiz interface running on a fast 1.4GHz processor. This thin (9.9mm thickness) phone has a 5MP back camera (unfortunately no flash) capable of HD (720p) video recording along with a front camera. There is a good 1650mAH battery. Galaxy S Plus comes with 16GB memory (expandable by up to 32GB), FM Radio, 3G, GPRS, Edge, WiFi and DLNA support; video and music player. This is a very good phone available at a good price, but there are other options as well in this price range.

2. HTC Sensation (₨ 23,899 on infibeam.com):
HTC sensation is perhaps the best phone in this range (its cousin the Sensation XE is still selling for over ₨ 30,000) and the only things working against it are the price and 1520 mAh battery which could have been better. The phone comes with a big 4.3 inch touch screen, though the resolution is not as good as the Samsung Galaxy S Plus, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread overlaid with HTC Sense interface running on a 1.2GHz dual core processor making it stand out among other single core phones. The phone has an 8MP back camera with a dual LED flash capable of full-HD (1080p) video recording along with a front camera for video calls. There is 1GB of internal memory expandable by up to 32GB, 3G, GPRS, Edge, WiFi and DLNA support along with video and music players. In terms of specifications, this is perhaps the best phone its price range.

3. Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V (₨ 17,419 on infibeam.com):
Towards the lower end of this price band, this phone comes with a 3.7 inch touchscreen display and has  Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sony’s Timescape user interface. The phone runs on a 1GHz processor with a separate Adreno 205 GPU and has a 5MP back camera with LED flash capable of HD (720p) video recording along with a front camera and a 1500mAh battery. The usable internal memory is 320MB which can be expanded to 32GB using SD cards. The phone also comes with the standard 3G, GPRS, Edge, WiFi and DLNA support along FM radio, music and video player. This good looking phone is a good option for anyone looking for a phone for around 17,000 INR, although there are better options if you are willing to spend a little more .

Other Phones to consider in this category:
Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro (₨ 18,740 on letsbuy.com): Similar to the Xperia Neo, this phone has a slide out physical QWERTY keyboard.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray (₨ 18,700 on flipkart.com): This phone comes with a 8MP camera and a 3.3 inch screen. Other aspects are similar to those in the Xperia Neo. Recommended for those who want a small phone with high performance.
HTC Desire S (₨ 21,699 on letsbuy.com): A less expensive option from HTC, this phone has a 3.7 inch display and a 1GHz processor with a 5MP flash enabled camera and a 1450mAh battery. In other aspect, it is similar to the HTC Sensation.

Upcoming Phones to consider in this category:
HTC One series has been showcased in the Mobile World Congress in February 2012, although nothing has been announced about when the phones will be available in India. These phones come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and have better processors.
